How to distinguish between welding neck flange and lap joint flange

Welding neck flange and lap joint flange are two common flange connection methods, which have some obvious differences in structure and can be distinguished by appearance and connection method.

Neck structure:

Butt welding flange with neck: This type of flange usually has a protruding neck, and the diameter of the neck matches the outer diameter of the flange. The presence of the neck can enhance the strength of the flange, making the connection more secure.
Lap joint flange: In contrast, lap joint flange usually does not protrude from the neck, and the outer diameter of the flange remains relatively uniform. The design of lap joint flange is simpler and suitable for some low-pressure or general applications.

Connection method:

Welding neck flange: This type of flange is usually connected to pipelines or equipment by welding. Welding can be carried out at the neck of the flange or at the interface between the flange plate and the pipeline.
Lap joint flange: This type of flange is usually connected to pipelines or equipment through bolts and nuts. The connection method of lap joint flange is relatively simple and easy to disassemble and install.

Application scenario:

Weld neck flange: Due to its structural design and welding connection method, it is mainly used in high-pressure, high-temperature or high connection strength requirements, such as in industries such as petroleum, chemical, and power.
Lap joint flange: suitable for general industrial and low-pressure applications, its installation and maintenance are relatively simple, and it is commonly used in some general pipeline systems and equipment connections.

By observing the appearance, neck structure, and connection method of the flange, you should be able to relatively easily distinguish between neck welded flanges and lap joint flange. In practical applications, ensure the selection of flange types suitable for specific engineering needs to ensure the safety and reliability of the connection.
